Technology and education as tools for the PRF to reduce accidents and combat irregularities on Brazilian highways

Highway safety is an issue that requires constant attention, especially in Brazil, where the number of accidents and violations is still high. With the increase in vehicle flow, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) has been seeking new ways to monitor, raise awareness and promote traffic safety. The combination of advanced technologies and road safety education has proven essential to make Brazilian roads safer and ensure the safety of drivers and passengers.

In recent years, the PRF has adopted cutting-edge technologies that strengthen its monitoring work on highways. In 2023, for example, the introduction of drones and license plate recognition systems represented a leap forward in the monitoring of irregularities. With these resources, it is possible to monitor traffic in real time, identify stolen vehicles and catch traffic violations with greater precision and agility. In addition to expanding the scope of inspections, technology makes combating violations more effective, since incidents can be quickly intercepted, preventing potential accidents.

To illustrate the practical application of PRF monitoring technologies, a recent video surveillance operation on BR-262, between Campos Altos and Luz, in Minas Gerais, exemplifies the positive impact of the use of drones on road safety. During the operation, carried out on a high-risk mountain stretch, police officers caught dozens of overtaking in prohibited areas and other serious violations. Even with video surveillance signs, many drivers disregarded traffic rules, highlighting the need for constant vigilance. According to the Brazilian Traffic Code, overtaking in prohibited areas is a very serious violation, resulting in 7 points on the driver's license and a high fine, and is one of the main causes of serious accidents on federal highways.

This example reinforces how the use of drones allows the PRF to monitor dangerous areas and promote a rapid response to violations, preventing accidents and educating drivers about the importance of safe driving. (see full article)

Recently, the PRF in Santa Catarina adopted drones to intensify inspections on BR-282 and BR-101, aiming to catch serious violations such as using a cell phone while driving, improper use of the left lane and not wearing a seatbelt. These unmanned aircraft, which offer a zoom of up to seven times and flight altitudes between 10 and 20 meters, guarantee a privileged view for agents, functioning as an elevated observation platform.

According to Leandro Andrade, head of the PRF Police Station in São José, drones act as “modern binoculars”, allowing the recording of violations for future citations without the need for immediate approach, an effective measure in busy and difficult-to-access stretches. This action is part of a national video monitoring strategy, seeking to standardize the use of advanced technologies on highways throughout the country, reinforcing the PRF's commitment to road safety and compliance with traffic regulations. However, technology alone is not enough to transform the reality of the highways. For lasting changes to occur, it is also necessary to invest in the training of responsible and conscientious drivers. Traffic education is a fundamental part of this mission, preparing drivers from childhood to understand the importance of road safety. Programs such as “Road Education is Vital”, developed in partnership with the National Traffic Department (DENATRAN), are examples of initiatives aimed at raising awareness among young people about respect and caution in traffic. By promoting this type of education, the PRF seeks to train a new generation of drivers who are better prepared and less likely to commit infractions.

The integration of technology and education creates a set of strategies that enhance road safety. The use of driving simulators, for example, allows drivers to be trained in safe environments, simulating real traffic situations. The “gamification” of educational activities is a creative way to attract the attention of young people and teach traffic rules in a fun and engaging way. These educational actions, combined with technology, increase drivers’ understanding of the impact of their actions on traffic and encourage them to adopt safer behavior.

Therefore, the combination of technology and education is an effective formula that strengthens the work of the PRF in combating irregularities and preventing accidents on Brazilian highways. By investing in integrated strategies, the PRF promotes safer traffic and contributes to the construction of a more conscious and responsible society. With actions like these, Brazil's highways become safer spaces for everyone, where citizenship and respect for traffic rules are increasingly valued.
